

MUSCAT: The Royal Hospital performed 81 organ transplant surgeries including 26 liver transplants and 55 kidney transplants between January 2025 and August 2026. In addition, the hospital conducted 1,116 donor and recipient assessment and follow-up procedures and received 3,413 visits and consultations.
Dr Al Warith bin Ahmed al Hashmi, Head of the Organ Transplantation Department and Consultant in Liver and Pancreas Transplantation and Surgery at the Royal Hospital, said that the department conducted over 8,236 laboratory tests, including more than 3,467 blood and urine analyses, 1,163 ultrasound and mammograms, 917 CT and angiography scans, 491 bone density scans, 244 MRI scans, 389 X-rays, 715 human leukocyte antigen (HLA) tests, 347 cardiac and circulatory assessments, 207 treadmill stress tests, 123 renal function tests, 43 PET scans, an 40 liver biopsies.
In the field of heart transplantation, the Royal Hospital performed four heart transplant surgeries in an achievement that reflects the competence of national staff and the integrated efforts of various medical specialities to develop organ transplantation services in the Sultanate of Oman.
Dr Al Warith said that organ donation is divided into two main types: living donation, where a medically eligible individual donates one of their kidneys or part of their liver after a comprehensive medical evaluation to ensure their safety and the safety of the recipient.
The second type is post-brain death donation, which allows for the use of organs from a brain-dead donor. This includes the donation of heart, liver, kidneys, and lungs to save the lives of other patients, in accordance with approved medical, legal, and religious regulations, he said.
Dr Al Hashmi pointed out that the Royal Hospital plays a vital role in the organ transplantation system in the Sultanate of Oman through its liver, kidney, and heart transplant services, in coordination with the Oman Centre for Organ and Tissue Donation and Transplantation, the Medical City for Military and Security Services and the University Medical City.
